WOMEN IN AFRICAN MUSIC

In a man’s world, the tears from our efforts

are the oceans you bask in.

Let it be known that you still search for my lullabies.

Anthologies unfold where I stand, the well will never run dry.

Cradling the sounds of Africa like a newborn,

Next to God we are everywhere, holding flames that beguile.

Between my lips are rivers you run to in search of holy water.

Sovereign voices call unto thee to celebrate our daughters.

Living in a man’s world, shaped by women,

You’d walk the miles to fetch us like water.

Each hairstyle we wear, they gather and gaze,

Afros, bantu knots, locs, cornrows, box braids.

We adorn our temples, a perfect canvas already, to entertain.

I carry you home on my back, we dance the night away.

As if night, diamonds are stars shimmering on our skin.

Touched by the sun, we offer flames to light your path.

Watch how we move; Kodak, Nicole Thea and Drey

Reveal warriors in goddesses, hearts wither and souls cry

as dancers step, with unparalleled rhythm through cultural portals.

There are never ending ways to describe our beauty.

Wearing your culture with pride, is elegance is unmatched.

Through African music, we celebrate our legacy.

The women hold everything together like a majestic mosaic.

Turning wildernesses into fields of sugar cane.

Showing men, women do not belong in one place.

There is no sun without our eyes watching over.

Protect our empresses, shield her with a lion’s paw.

A woman’s touch - louder than an elephant’s trumpet,

You feel her presence before she enters the room.

The anchor of African music, the soul inside the songs,

The heartbeat moving through each department.

Women in African music, we celebrate you,

Your strength brings us together.
